“Doing the right thing, the right way, every time – even when no-one is watching”. –

Remodelling, deconstruction and building processes require, at a minimum, that all the work is executed safely. Throughout all of our experience as builders, and through study of sites and behaviours, we’ve come to learn that despite any pro-active efforts by leadership, although fundamentally required, health and safety success can really only be achieved through everyone’s complete “buy-in”.

Overall corporate health and safety plans are always necessary but if health and safety are not top of mind every day for everyone, those plans can result in companies who simply have a mantra or a culture of compliance rather that an actual operational plan that works. Site and project specific plans are also required but if the sites are fast & fluid because the project is fast-tracked, understaffed, behind schedule or nearing completion, the risks elevate quickly.

We’ve found that top performers in safety are also the top performers in their skills. The team members who are most proficient in their chosen skill set and professional in their overall approach to their work, are also those who take OHS the most seriously and perform in kind. So it can be assumed then that a company seeking a zero workplace accident record will simultaneously seek to hire top talent while also offering comprehensive training and facilitating and incentivizing a robust health & safety attitude throughout the ranks.

Beyond our Corporate Construction Safety and Health Program and our project specific Health & Safety Standards and Practices and Procedures, Costo Construction Corp. prioritizes health & safety by doing the following:

  1. We hire and select people that demonstrate a superior level of commitment to excellent quality work and service and who take their roles and responsibilities at work seriously.
  2. We provide, encourage and facilitate mentorship action and roles by senior leaders within our organization to influence and train the entire team.
  3. We break down work packages and work tasks for each tradesperson on our sites and encourage a hyper focused attitude toward performing their specific jobs correctly. This of course, includes a focus on safety set up and execution.
  4. We structure our contracts and projects to ensure they are best staffed by the right people who we know will lead with a keen eye for risk identification, action plan for mitigation and genuine commitment to OHS best practices. Safety starts with the commitment which is prioritized in the plan and followed through by the people on the ground, in the air, the truck and in the office.
  5. We create a team approach toward OHS whereby, the team wins when each person is accountable to the other within the team and seeks to help improve vigilance and performance.
  6. We incentivize an attitude of safety by ensuring that each person on our team is aware that they can only truly be deemed as a professional when they do the right thing, the right way, every time, even when no-one is watching. When someone is deemed a professional, we will invest in their continued professional development and education, pay them a premium and endeavour to work with them for life.
